Three things that can come apart
Moral value means that a person's life matters. Practical necessity means others need that person's contribution. Experienced meaning concerns whether life feels purposeful. These concepts influence one another, but they are not interchangeable.
The argument developed by W360 is that practical necessity helps support human bargaining power and agency. If advanced systems can supply every contribution people previously provided, humanity may become dependent on continued protection rather than mutual need. That concern remains even if people can still enjoy relationships and creative pursuits.
Being cared for is not the same as having a say
Suppose a community has abundant goods supplied by an automated institution. Its members pursue hobbies and care for one another, but cannot alter the institution's rules or operate it independently. Their lives may contain meaning while their collective position remains vulnerable.
This raises a question: what reliably protects people when the dominant systems no longer depend on their cooperation? Appeals to benevolence need a durable mechanism behind them.
Preserve a consequential human role
Possible responses include maintaining human authority over essential resources, protecting domains of human responsibility, and enforcing limits on systems that could make that authority ineffective. Shared ownership may improve distribution, but ownership written into law still needs institutions capable of enforcing it.
How much necessity is required for secure agency remains disputed. People can protect one another through commitments and institutions that exceed immediate usefulness. The unresolved challenge is whether those protections remain effective under a large and persistent capability gap.
